Naming Rights

I was encouraging my cousin this weekend to follow his dream and form a Bob Seger cover band called Turn The Page, and I started to wonder what are the ultimate names for cover bands devoted to a single artist? I know Saturday Night Special is synonymous w/ my long standing Skynryd project, but I think my blinders are preventing me from seeing all the possibilities. I was only able to come up w/ HOT STUFF as the Donna Summer entry (oh yeah, all caps). Please feel free to add your own big or small candidates (I'm looking at you Otto).

Personally I'm a fan of female-themed names for all-women cover bands like Lez Zeppelin and AC/DShe. But I think the best name for a cover band would be mine for the Replacements. I would call it "How Did The Vomit Get Up On The Ceiling?"

Yes, nothing is more disappointing than going to an In Through The Out Door show and discovering it's a bunch of transvestites playing Zep covers. Lez Zeppelin is much better.

You cannot name your tribute band after a bootleg w/ 9 words in the title. You need something short and sweet. It may not be in the top 50 Replacements songs, but the ultimate name is Gary's Got A Boner.

How 'bout Geezer? Gray-hairs liked my dad could get on stage and sing, "Oooo, weee, oooo, I used to look just like Buddy Holly."

I think you've tapped into a whole new market, older people playing in tribute bands. The trick is you have to play the songs of a band that is of a later generation than you (like the Geezer suggestion). I once saw a bunch of old dudes playing Mr Roboto and it turned out they actually were Styx. It was not pleasant.

Sorry to be late to the game. For the record, my favorite cover band is Hot August Knights, a group of KISS clones fronted by a dead ringer for Neil Diamond.

It seems the better cover bands like to use song/album names that subtly remind you you're not getting the real deal. In that spirit, here are some thoughts:

Who's Next (The Who)
Wish You Were Here (Pink Floyd)
Jukebox Heroes (Foreigner)
Deja Vu (CSNY)
The Bollocks (Sex Pistols)
