Projected World Cup Draw

This Friday is the final draw for World Cup 2006. I can understand projections about who the top 8 seeds will be and even columns about is the draw fixed, but mock projections are kind of a joke. They draw the teams out of a brandy snifter, so how you project what teams will be in what group I don't know. I'll try and do some research by drinking brandy over the next couple of days.

Talked about this over at my place. While I'm thrilled we dodged Brazil and Germany in the first round, I think it's clear we've landed in the Group of Death.

Pedro was saying that all the US media claims that we are in the group of death while the rest of the world claims the Argentina/Netherlands group is the group of death. You knew it was going to be either the group w/ the Netherlands or the group w/ the Czechs, so I think you have to look at the other teams. Italy probably isn't as strong as Argentina, but it's pretty close and playing in Europe improves the Italians. The 2 African teams (Ghana and Cote d'Ivoire) are probably a wash (if Freddy Adu joins the Ghana side it will only be a big deal to the American media and shouldn't affect the matches (at least not for 2006)). That leaves the USA and Serbia and Montenegro. I'll admit total bias, but the USA seems way tougher than the S&M team (could that be a team motto? tougher than S&M). To me that makes group E (USA) the real group of death. Let's hope those assisted suicide laws hold up in the Supreme Court or Bruce Arena and company might get a call from the federales if they don't make it to the quarterfinals.
